Technology on the Cutting Edge
Posted on 2012-04-16 08:10:11
Eyecare has come a long way since just asking which is better, 1 or 2? Optometrists today are the gatekeepers of all eyecare. In addition to prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses, we are able to diagnose and treat eye diseases, infections, and injuries. In fact, we frequently get referrals from walk-in clinics who prefer that someone specially trained in eye care handle those situations.
What's very exciting to us at Envision is the wealth of new technology available that allows us to better examine and treat the eyes. In our office, we are particularly excited about:
• Optomap: The Optomap retinal exam is a high-tech camera and laser scanner that takes digital images of the entire back of the eye. In most cases we no longer have to dilate your pupils in order to get a thorough look of the retina that lines the back of the eye. This gives us an unprecedented ability to accurately track conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and even diabetes or high blood pressure (both of which can have serious effects on the eye). This test should be part of everyone's routine annual eye exam.
• Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): Yes, it's a mouthful, but the OCT is a test that's revolutionizing the management of eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration. The OCT is a scanning laser that gives results similar to an ultrasound - we can see the various layers of the nerves and tissues in the back of the eye and look for subtle signs of potential problems before they become vision-threatening.
When you come in for your next eye exam, ask us about these tests and be assured that we take your continued eye health seriously.
Welcome!
